John Clausing: Stewardship Today

One of the most memorable quotes of my lifetime was when President John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”  This is a political message that makes a great nation.  But I would like to modify it slightly today.  “Ask not what God can do for you, ask what you can do with what God has given you.” This philosophy makes a great people and a great Church.

Almost 3 years ago, I suffered a near fatal heart attack, a complete blockage of the so called “widow-maker”.  But for the swift advocacy of my daughter, the skill of the Duke University cardiac unit and the Grace of God, I would not be here today.  Sometime afterwards in a conversation with Pastor Karen, I expressed my gratitude for my extra time. She asked me in words to this effect, “Now that you have this extra time, what are you going to do with it? God has something for you to do.” This got me to thinking: Yes, I am old (85 years now) and yes, I have health and mobility issues (I have Parkinson’s disease and use a walker), but actually there are many things that I still can do.  I offered myself to the Fond Doux Foundation, Epworth’s main expression of global ministry. Indeed, they welcomed me and they found that they could use my services. Sometime, I would like to say more about that and I do hope that you have read my book.

Today, however, my message is very simple, “Ask not what God can do for you, ask what you can do with what God has given you.” This is stewardship.  I hope and pray that you find what you can do, physically, morally, financially. You will be blessed. I promise. It’s God’s promise also. Amen.
